I watched the Oscars last night.  As a general rule (yeah, I just tried hard not to say rule of thumb, which is apparently a phrase rooted in evil) I always watch awards shows —- except for the ones that you can predict the winner because they are the only nominee in attendance; think People’s Choice Awards and the American Music Awards.  This year, though, I saw several of the films that were nominated and, therefore, felt a little more invested in the results than I have in other years where I spent more time determining who looks prettiest and who is dating who on the celeb front.  This award season I discussed my opinions with my friends, pushed my agenda of movie watching on them probably more than they would have liked, and even went so far as to log my predictions on that handy dandy iTunes Oscar app so we could compare our choices in the winners column.  (Please note that I use the phrase “handy dandy” only in jest, as that lame ass app was hardly close to being responsive or functional.)
This year, I found that I was compelled by many of the stories told on the screen: the Kings Speech was empowering, the Town was strangely relateable.  I was blown away by the creativity of movies like Inception.  I was oddly drawn into the Social Network.  These were movies that made me ask why I so rarely went to the theater on weekends.  I mean, I love popcorn, so that couldn’t have been what was keeping me away.  haha  What made this year different than other years?  Trent Reznor made this year different!
Ok, ok, well, of course I am (at least half) kidding when I say that, but I will acknowledge that good ol’ TR did play a role in my return to the movies, in a tangential way.  Since my friends and I used to pinch our pennies to fund our NIN tour-related travels, I had more change in my pockets this year to fund all of those 13 dollar tickets at AMC.  That point, I suppose, goes hand in hand with the fact that I have just plain been in town more often this year.  Oh, and let’s not forget the direct connection: the fact that the great Trentinto, himself, (along with Atticus Ross) scored the Social Network soundtrack.
I’d be lying if I said that their nomination had factored into my decision to watch the Academy Awards last night, but I can assure you, truthfully, that their win was the highlight of my evening (no simple task after I realized that cutie Jake Gyllenhaal was there sans date and that Scarlett Johanssen’s red dress was a complete nightmare.  haha).  Here’s the thing, nothing makes me happier than seeing people who deserve them, receive accolades.  Trent Reznor deserves the accolades.
In spite of the years of shit I have taken from those closest to me, I have never faltered in my support of all things Trent Reznor.  Sure, if requested, I can provide you with a play by play of each of his albums’ (and singles, and live version only radio show recordings, and Japanese only releases, and…) highlights and low-lights; and sure, I can talk to you about how hot he looked back in those videos in the ’90s…and then again in the mid-two-thousands; but now, more than ever, my appreciation has evolved into more than that.  This is a guy that has embraced changes in modern music.  He has trail-blazed uncommon business models.  He has paid it forward and given back to the community in uncommon ways.  He has delivered phenomenal shows at times that a lesser artist would have walked off the stage.  He has treated my friends and I, warmly and with kindness, when we have crossed his path.  Hell, I could go on here for a while but, ultimately, I took to writing this post, not to list the reasons that I, Niki Lemeshka, think that Trent Reznor is tops, but rather to acknowledge that it feels great to see people you like, succeed.
I know it’s a basic concept.  If you read this far and are now wondering what kind of shallow minded individual would come up with this simplistic moral, I apologize for your disappointment.  But here’s the thing, we live in a time that things tend to be all about me, me, me, and I am as guilty as the next of sometimes becoming a little too self-involved.  I think this year’s journey into the movies has allowed me to escape from that every once in a while and last night, seeing good old TR up there holding his golden statue, I was genuinely excited for someone/something that benefits me personally in no way.  It’s a feeling I haven’t had enough of in the last while, and I was excited to reconnect with it, regardless of Trent Reznor’s involvement.

This scene completely rivals the unopened set of Yo! MTV Raps trading cards I received in the mail today, courtesy of 1988.  Yes, I am completely serious.  Photos to come soon.
