I don’t mean to hock a bunch of “causes” today [she types while wearing a sticker, a bracelet, and a pin showing support for three different philanthropies thrown her way throughout the day. haha] but I did want to put out into the world that today is LiveSTRONG Day. As many of you know, cancer has had a major impact on my family, most recently (and for the last umpteen years) with my mom. Mom has been able to use her story to show many people, who have been newly diagnosed with cancer, that it is possible to beat the disease and go on to survive years after their “you only have ____ months left” diagnosis. My mom was named one of the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s first ambassadors in 2006. She has stayed involved with LAF/Livestrong since then, and continues to advocate on behalf of people who have been affected by the disease.
Here’s my part: Obviously, we are all being exposed to the national conversation about healthcare reform. I think this is an extremely important issue, having seen people I care about dealing with an already overburdened system and hearing stories about others who have been given the brush off time and again by big business due to their “pre-existing conditions.” I am scared that this will continue to be an issue for many people I care about unless we all do our part to speak out and tell Washington (and anyone that will listen) that we need a change.
Because today is LiveSTRONG Day, LAF is asking that the voices of those affected by cancer speak out: “Our goal is a world without cancer—and the first step is making sure all survivors can get the insurance they need to fight against cancer. It’s not right for insurers to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions, or to drop people when they get sick and need insurance the most.”
They have set up at petition to show your support and I hope that you will take a just a moment and sign it.
