Just wanted to put the word out for those in Atlanta hoping to take a stand against Arizona’s recent [read: ludicrous, outrageous, unconstitutional, racist, ethnocentric, shameful] law allowing law enforcement to stop, at random and without cause, any person who they believe may be undocumented based on profiling for search/arrest, that there will be a rally tomorrow.
Here’s the info I received:
BOYCOTT ARIZONA! Don’t Play Ball with the State of Hate!
Join us on SATURDAY, May 15th at 6:00pm for a ”pep” rally outside Turner Field at the Braves vs. Arizona Diamonbacks game!
Arizona’s SB 1070 is an Apartheid law like something out of the Jim Crow era. It is the latest and most severe attack on Latinos and immigrants. When the Arizona Diamondbacks come to play the Atlanta Braves, join us in saying “we will not tolerate racist laws in Arizona, Georgia, or anywhere!”
Why we oppose SB 1070:
- It legalizes racial profiling by requiring that police officers stop anyone “suspected” of being undocumented.
- SB 1070 creates a police state where anyone can be arrested who cannot immediately show his/her proof of citizenship or residency.
- Conservative politicians throughout the country are making plans to pass similar laws in other states, including Georgia. Don’t let the hate spread!
- SB 1070 is an escalation of the ongoing criminalization of Black and immigrant communities throughout the country, through policies like discriminatory drug laws, and 287g and “secure communities.”
The Boycott:
- Immigrant rights and anti-Racist activists around the country are protesting outside Diamondback games to call on Major League Baseball to move the 2011 All Star game and spring training out of Arizona.
- The Diamondbacks are only one part of a larger boycott on Arizona, to put pressure on state politicians and President Obama to immediately intervene to repeal the law: www.altoarizona.com.
