I saw this band, New York Rivals, open for the Lemonheads a couple of times and found them to be utterly enjoyable. Super nice dudes with ultra white teeth. Now that I am thinking about all of their positive points, I think one of them is named Nash or something equally as awesome. So, that’s a bonus, right?

While the image overlays in this video just made me a bit motion sick, I still wanted to share. Turns out either I suck at googling or they do not have a proper website, but you can hear a bit more on the web, so check them out, y’all.

Eight female state senators in Georgia walked out of the Senate chambers on Wednesday to protest two bills that hinder access to abortion and contraceptives. All eight female democratic senators left the chambers together after two bills they oppose passed the Republican-led Senate. From Atlanta’s WXIA, the legislation:

Prohibits state employees from using state health benefits to pay for abortions

Does not allow employees of private religious institutions to demand that their insurance policies pay for contraceptives

“We stood together to protest what we feel is absolutely a war on women here in Georgia and we want to sound the alert to Georgians,” said Sen. Nan Orrick.

Republican state senator Joshua McKoon said of the legislation, “What I would say is the war that’s being waged is on a religious minority in this country that has strong beliefs that are protected by the First Amendment.”

The bills now heads to the House, where both are expected to pass.

The senators who walked out: Sen. Gloria Butler, Sen. Gale Davenport, Sen. Nan Orrock, Sen. Freddie Powell Sims, Sen. Donzella James, Sen. Miriam Paris, Sen. Valencia Seay and Sen. Horacena Tate. Looks like I’ll be spending my Friday night emailing these senators to thank them for taking a stance on an incredibly important issue.

In my life, I’ve spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours enjoying live music, but maybe none were so precious as the first few hours spent watching Whitney Houston play Chastain Park in Atlanta, Georgia during August, 1986. Hers was my first concert. I remember so many details from that night, it could have happened 25 days ago just as easily as it happened 25 years ago. Today, I’m going to remember her in that way, as the lady that offered so much that it sparked a life-long love of live performance. Way to go, Whitney; you’ll be missed.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross did not win a Golden Globe for the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo score last night, but I still enjoyed seeing them recognized for their work —- in a mainstream way that does not involve some uninformed person mentioning the phrase “fuck you like an animal.” Can’t say I was as excited to see TR’s poor choice of footwear. ;)

While I do think Occupy Wall Street, as a whole, is lacking significant direction for the masses, I am glad to see that artists I enjoy have been creating new works in association with a protest movement. Saw the following in Bob Lefsetz’s latest mailbag and thought it was interesting.:

Hi Bob,

i’m the singer in the band OurLadyPeace. We were signed to Columbia for 10 years,1997-2007 had a cpl platinum records blah blah blah.

I’ve been reading some interesting stories regarding The OCCUPY movement lately. Some asking, ” where is this movements Dylan or Joan Baez or Lennon?” Others telling bands/artists to fuck off and stay away from the movement.
In a day and age when branding is such an ingrained part of our culture i find this a very compelling issue.

I’ve been involved in different social causes ever since the day i was handed an Amnesty Int. sticker at a Peter Gabriel concert back in the late 80’s. Adbusters has always been my preferred reading material. (great counter culture mag from Vancouver & initiators of this movement). i’ve traveled to and filmed Docs in Iraq and Darfur and helped rebuild schools in D.R of Congo with an organization i trust called Warchild.

On Oct 15th the 4 members of OLP occupied in Detroit,LA,Toronto and NY. We marched, spoke to protesters and shot footage over the course of last weekend and have now edited a video with that footage to a song we recently recorded called “Fight The Good Fight”

Interestingly enough we’ve received numerous hate emails, dislikes on facebook etc for supporting the movement. I fully understand the pitfalls for an artist involving themselves with certain issues. This one i’m baffled by though…isnt everybody concerned with the future? Are we not all worried about our jobs, education,healthcare, the fact that there is no transparency in Govt or big business these days? This movement has suffered from disinformation and shameful reporting by the mainstream media.

Much like the artists with the courage to voice their opinions in days past , this song/video is our way of supporting the movement and getting the message out. Nothing Machiavellian about this. We’re speaking from our hearts.
Hell, I brought my young kids to the Los Angeles rally.This song is for them!
